The Course

Do you love the feeling of gliding with the current yet hate having to fight against it to get back to the boat or shore? The PADI Drift Diver specialty course involves learning the best techniques to get the most out of diving in a drift, so that you can relax on your dive and let yourself fly through the water.

The PADI Drift diver specialty covers planning and organising a drift dive, equipment considerations, techniques to control and maintain good buoyancy as well as guiding divers in the best method to ascend/descend and exit the water.

Course Content

The course consists of a knowledge development session & 2 Open water dives which will cover:

  • The planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems & hazards of drift diving
  • Special equipment – floats, lines & reels
  • Proper procedures for buoyancy control, navigation & communication
  • Site selection and overview of aquatic currents – causes and effects
  • Techniques for staying close to a buddy or together as a group

Knowledge Development

Knowledge development is based on a self-study method, allowing you to study in your own time, at your own pace. Home study is backed up by an academic session with a PADI Instructor, to ensure full understanding of drift diving theory.

Open Water Dives

Students must complete 2 Open Water dives to certify as a PADI Drift Diver. During these dives you will cover recommended entry/exit techniques, buddy contact, maintaining good buoyancy & descent/ascent techniques.
