Meet the Team

Darren McNamara
PADI IDCS & Dive Centre Manager

Darren started diving in 1996, completing both his PADI Open water & Advanced Open Water courses in quick succession here in the UK.

An avid diver, he steadily worked his way through the ranks to become a PADI Divemaster and enjoyed assisting at the local dive school so much he decided to take the PADI Instructor challenge in 2000. Darren is most talented at putting divers at ease and ensuring that students are having maximum fun at all times.

Darren has continued his diving education to become a PADI Staff Instructor & is able to teach a multitude of PADI Specialties. He is also an EFR Instructor & A.S.S.E.T Equipment Technician.

In addition to recreational diving, Darren is a certified TDI Advanced Nitrox & Decompression diver and has the amibition of completing his rebreather certification.

As the Dive Centre manager, Darren can be found running the dive shop and is the first point of contact for all enquiries.

Katy Bloor
PADI IDCS & Diver Training Manager

Katy completed her PADI Open Water course in 1998 at the age of 15 & never thought that a seemingly innocent hobby would turn into her main ambition in life.

After working as a PADI Divemaster during her year out in Asia, she was keen to progress to Instructor & finally in 2003 she became a PADI OWSI.

Now a PADI Staff Instructor, Katy is incredibly enthusiastic about teaching diving. As Training Manager she enjoys nothing more than helping a student overcome a tricky skill or completing that final open water dive. Katy’s patience and friendly nature is key to creating a spark of magic for all children’s parties.

Katy has also experienced the realms of technical diving by completing the TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures courses. As with every other aspect of diving, she loved the courses and has found a new passion for learning more about deeper diving.

Katy is fun, excitable & passionate & can be best identified by her infectious laugh.

Clive Albon
PADI Platinum Course Director

Clive certified as a PADI Instructor in 1990 and became a PADI course director in 2000. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is one of an elite group of approx 90 PADI Platinum Course Directors worldwide.

Clive's own diving and teaching experience extends beyond the UK to include Egypt, Malta and Tenerife as well as many other countries.

The prestigious rating of Platinum Course Director rating shows Clives commitment to diver training. He is able to teach a multitude of PADI Instructor Specialties as well as PADI Distinctive Specialties. He has also been an EFR Instructor trainer for many years.

Simon Botham
PADI MSDT

Simon started diving during a less than exciting holiday in Lanzarote in 2000. At that point he qualified as a PADI Scuba Diver, caught the bug and on his return to the UK sought out a local dive club.

As soon as he joined Sub-Mission Dive club he continued his further education & soon progressed to PADI Rescue diver and then Divemaster.  His PADI Divemaster internship with Sub-Mission gave him the push needed to take on the PADI IDC and IE and in March 2006 he became a PADI OWSI and EFR Instructor.

Simon has progressed to PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and is now able to teach a multitude of PADI Specialty Courses.

Richard Halfpenny
PADI OWSI

Rich began diving in 2004 after signing up, along with his wife Claire, for a PADI Open Water course with Sub-Mission. Having successfully completed the course he went to Egypt where he completed the PADI Advanced Open Water course. Already hooked he really thought it could not get better…

....but it did. A seemingly innocuous dive off the back of Jackson reef led to one of his most memorable diving experiences, an encounter with Hammerhead sharks. Only 10 dives into a career and a lifelong memory set in stone.

Coming back from Egypt saw more diving and continued education, various specialties, and PADI Rescue Diver certifications led him to Divemaster. Once He started working hands on with students he realised where the future lay. Skip forward to March 2006 and he completed the PADI Instructor exams, and you have his current qualification of PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

Neil Bagley
PADI Assistant Instructor

Neil never intended to love diving; in fact jumping into Capernwray mid-February was enough to make him think twice about finishing the course! But he did and he came back time and time again. Diving soon took its hold over Neil and over time he progressed to PADI Assistant Instructor.

Neil is infamous amongst the students for his laid back attitude and easy going nature. He is an asset to the team and has a magic touch with students, putting them at ease immediately.

Darren Birt
PADI Assistant Instructor

Darren learnt to dive in Gran Canaria and then took the plunge into Stoney Cove to convert to a UK diver. Spurred on by diving with his friend Ben, he continued up the PADI ladder to reach PADI Divemaster level. Darren found assisting and helping students overcome problems extremely rewarding so worked hard to become a PADI Assistant Instructor.  With the support of Sub-Mission, he is now working towards his PADI OWSI qualification and will make a fantastic Instructor and a valuable asset to the team.

He is just as happy taking in the scenery of a beautiful coral reef as getting fully immersed in a bit of wreck or deep diving. He has successfully completed his TDI Advanced Nitrox & Decompression procedures courses and is now planning some more challenging dives with his buddy Ben.

Darren is also a qualified ANDI gas blender.

Ben Snape
PADI Divemaster

Ben started diving on a holiday in Gran Canaria with his friend Darren and took the PADI Open Water Course whilst out there. He returned to Gran Canaria 6 months later to complete the PADI Advanced Open Water course.

A few months later Ben joined Sub-Mission Dive School and quickly progressed through various Specialty courses increasing his experience and knowledge, which led to the successful completion of his PADI Rescue Diver and PADI Divemaster Courses.

Particular interests include wreck diving and underwater photography, but like all of the Divemasters at Sub-Mission, Ben enjoys nothing more than assisting with student divers undertaking pool and open water training.

Like his buddy Darren he too has completed his TDI Advanced Nitrox & Decompression Procedure courses and will be venturing that little bit deeper in search of those wrecks outside the depth limits of recreational diving.

Ben is also a qualified ANDI gss blender.

Dawn Marsh

PADI Divemaster

Dawn first got the diving bug during a holiday in Turkey. On returning home Dawn was recommended by a friend to Sub-Mission Dive School and completed her PADI Open Water course in March 2006.

After a nervous start in the cold waters of Stoney Cove, Dawn soon realised her passion for diving and there has been no stopping her since. She completed both the PADI Advanced & PADI Rescue Diver courses and broadened her knowledge, skills and confidence by successfully completing PADI's prestigious Master Scuba Diver award.

In November 2007, Dawn changed direction with her diving and achieved a milestone by completeing her PADI Divemaster training along side Jasmin and Martin.

In her valued role as a PADI Divemaster, Dawn draws on her own training experiences to teach and assist others to overcome problems.

She plans to further her education in 2008 by completeing the PADI Assistant Instructor course, and who knows she might just be a fully fledged PADI OWSI by the end of the year!

Simon Bowen
PADI Divemaster

Simon started diving at Sub-Mission with Darren and Katy in September 2005 and completed his PADI Open Water and Advanced courses in quick succession to enable a diving holiday that was planned to Sharm El Sheikh for November of that year.

The fifth dive after certification had him visiting "The Thistlegorm" in the Red Sea, and now he is totally addicted to diving. Simon has worked through the PADI Rescue Diver course, to find himself in the middle of his PADI Divemaster training.

Simon loves diving, and assisting students in all aspects of diving, and will to be an Instructor by the end of this year. He plans to move to Egypt for a career change in the near future and instruct for a living.

Jasmin Smith

PADI Divemaster

Jasmin completed her PADI Open Water course in Turkey in June 2006 then continued her training with Submission Dive School upon her return. She dived in the UK intermittently until May 2007 before joining Sub-Mission Dive Club for a dive trip to Egypt.

From then on she was hooked, full of energy she returned to the UK with a more positive outlook to diving. Jasmin is well known in the dive club for her enthusiasm and passion for anything diving related.  She is now a PADI Divemaster and is hoping to do her PADI OWSI by September. The most rewarding part of her role at Submission Dive is seeing individuals overcome fears in the water to become confident and natural divers.

She doesn’t even mind 5.00 am starts every weekend, the thrill and exhilaration of diving more than makes up for that!

Martin Statham

PADI Divemaster

Martin is a self confessed adrenaline junkie. Before he started diving he was involved in a variety of active hobbies such as mountaineering, rock climbing, martial arts and so diving was another adventure sport for him to try.

Diving turned into more than just a one-off taster for Martin though and his love for the sport soon took its grip on him, especially on a holiday to the Red Sea soon after he qualified.

Since qualifying he has never looked back and in the last 12 months has completed over 200 dives. He has realised his potential as a dive coach and mentor and is now working towards his Assistant Instructor qualification.

Syd Devine

PADI Divemaster

Syd started diving whilst on a family holiday in Mexico in August 2007 where he completed his PADI Open Water course. As soon as he returned to the UK he tracked down Sub-Mission and was eager to know more about the dive club, courses and equipment.

Keen not to let his new found love of diving wane, he completed the PADI Advanced Diver & PADI Rescue Diver courses in quick succession with Sub-Mission.

After a gruelling 3 months PADI Divemaster internship Syd has grown into a confident, knowledgeable diver and is a great asset to the Sub-Mission dive team.

He enjoys all aspects of the diving scene and like Mike is keen to assist with training others to share his passion for the sport. Both Syd & Mike are enthusiastic divers and love nothing more than to guide newly certified divers around their favourite dive sites.

Mike Morris

PADI Divemaster

Mike started diving when he undertook his PADI Open Water qualification in June 2006 at the island of Bol in Croatia, he then enjoyed a leisurely 12 month’s of no hassles diving in warm water only.

During a trip to Taba in August 2007 he completed his PADI Advanced Open Water qualification and from there things went crazy!!!!

In November 2007 he completed his PADI Rescue Diver and Emergency First Response qualifications with Sub-Mission & experienced his first taste of diving in the UK.

In April 2008 Mike successfully completed his PADI Divemaster qualification and is now looking to commence his PADI Assistant Instructor Certification as soon as possible!!!!!

Mike, Syd and their semi-dry suits can be found most weekends bobbing around in the water whatever the conditions…….yes they are somewhat worrying!!!!! And they actively encourage anybody foolhardy enough to join them on their quest for dives.

Mike can be found assisting at the pool at every opportunity and is happy to help out with the children’s Scuba parties, Snorkeling classes & PADI training courses.

Paul Starkey
PADI Divemaster Trainee

Paul loves diving! He first started diving on holiday in Cyprus in 2004 but ran out of time and certified as a PADI Scuba Diver. Paul had seen the video of the infamous wreck of the Zenobia and desperately wanted to dive it, so upon returning to the UK completed his PADI Open Water Course.

Other courses followed and he did his PADI Advanced Open Water and Deep Specialty courses in April 2005. Paul returned to Cyprus in May 2005 and finally did the first of many excellent dives on 'The Zen'. It was just as amazing as he thought it would be and from that point he was hooked on diving, completing several PADI Specialties and the PADI Rescue Diver course.

Paul is currently undertaking the PADI Divemaster Course and will be a valuable member of the team if they can manage to drag him away from diving in Cyprus.
